American Heritage

Name: Sara Noble

My Title(s) Are/Were: Managing Editor, Business Manager

I Work(ed) at These Magazines: Time, The Atlantic, Inc. Magazine, Harvard Business Review

My Magazine Career: Is over 🙁.

Magazine I Miss: American Heritage (the hardcover editions).

I Miss It Because: This choice is a tip-off to my age and requires some time travel. Growing up I looked forward to visiting my grandfather. Not for his company, since he was a curmudgeon, but for the chance to explore his collection of American Heritage magazines. The magazine was published bimonthly! In hardcover! With no advertising! That’s where the time travel comes in. It’s fantastical now to even imagine there was a magazine published in hardcover with no advertising. Written by Pulitzer authors, it was a dense read with few design flourishes, but as a kid interested in history, I thought it was quite special. By the late seventies, the hardcover morphed into a softcover edition, but it continued to be a finalist or winner of multiple National Magazine Awards in the 80s/90s.
